The Anglican Chorale of Southeast Florida
The Anglican Chorale of Southeast Florida exists to sing the beautiful service of Choral Evensong and to renew and nurture this heritage throughout Southeast Florida. The Chorale is co-directed by Simon Jacobs and Matthew Steynor, and sings on the second and fourth Sundays of the month at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 464 NE 16 Street, Miami.
Why celebrate Evensong?
The service of Evensong, also known as Evening Prayer, dates back to the Reformation, arising as a combination of the old Catholic Offices of Compline and Vespers. It has been sung daily ever since in Cathedrals, Churches and Colleges throughout the Anglican Communion, of which the Episcopal Church is a part. Evensong provides a chance for all to encounter the word of God in a peaceful liturgical setting.
What happens at Evensong?
Evensong makes use of the ancient poetry of the Church set to beautiful music; some of it hundreds of years old, some of it new. The Anglican Chorale of Southeast Florida sings much of the service, including psalms (sung to Anglican Chant) and Canticles (The Song of Mary and The Song of Simeon). The organ is played by South Florida's finest organists on Trinity's historic instrument.
How long does Evensong last?
Evensongs last no longer than forty-five minutes. Once or twice a year there is a sermon, extending the service to around sixty minutes.
Why does the choir sing so much at Evensong?
In Choral Evensong the choir sings on behalf of the congregation. The Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis are sung entirely by the choir. Some of the prayers are also sung by the Officiant and Choir on behalf of the people, allowing the congregation time to meditate and enter into deeper prayer.
What does the congregation do at Evensong?
The congregation joins in the singing of the hymns, the Apostles' Creed and the spoken prayers at the end of the service. The congregation joins in silent meditation through prayers and canticles.
Is there a reception following Evensong?
Yes, there is: having spent time pondering and reflecting on the mysteries of our lives, it is also important that we have fellowship with those in our community. The reception gives us a chance to talk and share with those who have celebrated with us, and also to enjoy a glass of sherry or punch!
